Ukraine Targets Key Crimean Oil Terminal In Major Strike Against Russian Energy Facilities

Ukraine’s military has claimed responsibility for a missile strike on a large oil terminal off the coast of the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula, marking the latest in a series of attacks on energy facilities controlled by Moscow.

The target was the Feodosia terminal, Crimea’s largest oil processing facility, in an overnight assault.

Although Russian-installed officials in Crimea have yet to confirm the strike, they acknowledged a fire at the terminal.

No casualties have been reported, but local authorities declared a municipal-level emergency, evacuating 300 residents as firefighters battled the blaze, according to Russian state media outlet Tass.

Footage shared online showed smoke rising over the terminal, and officials confirmed efforts to control the fire were ongoing.

Meanwhile, Russia’s defence ministry reported that 12 out of 21 Ukrainian drones launched overnight toward Crimea were intercepted and shot down.

Ukraine’s military said the terminal was used to supply oil to Russian occupation forces, which have held Crimea since its illegal annexation by Russia in 2014. The same facility was previously hit in a Ukrainian drone strike in March.

Ukrainian officials have defended their strikes on Russian energy facilities as a justified response to Moscow’s repeated attacks on Ukraine’s own energy infrastructure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed in June that at least 80% of Ukraine’s thermal power and a third of its hydroelectric generation had been destroyed by Russian strikes, causing widespread blackouts.

In another development, Ukraine’s air force reported downing 32 drones and two missiles launched by Russia toward Kyiv overnight.

However, one Kinzhal missile bypassed air defences and struck near the Starokostiantyniv airfield in the Khmelnytskyi region, a base targeted by Russia due to its reported housing of Western-donated F-16 fighter jets. Since August 2023, approximately 65 F-16s have been pledged to Ukraine by NATO countries, with the latest deliveries arriving from the Netherlands.

Additionally, a Russian airstrike in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson left 17 people injured, including a two-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl, after four bombs were dropped on the area, according to regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin.
