EKO HOT BLOG reports that Ukrainian First Lady, Olena Zelenska met with Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday as she began a high-profile visit to Washington that will include a session with US counterpart Jill Biden.
Ms. Zelenska met Monday with Secretary of State Antony Blinken and is due to hold talks with first lady Jill Biden on Tuesday, the White House said. Ms. Zelenska is scheduled to deliver remarks to lawmakers on Wednesday at 11 a.m., House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) said.
Dr. Biden last met with Ms. Zelenska in May when the U.S. first lady made an unannounced visit to Ukraine.
“Met today with Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska to discuss the immense humanitarian costs of President [Vladimir] Putin’s war,” Mr. Blinken said on Twitter. “The United States remains committed to helping the people of Ukraine defend themselves from Russia, secure justice, and rebuild their country.”
Even though Ms. Zelenska doesn’t have an official portfolio in the Ukrainian government, her visit signals the heightened push by Kyiv to seek more military aid and political backing as Russia’s war in Ukraine nears the five-month mark.
Her husband, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, addressed Congress virtually in March, pressing for more military gear.
His wife is in Washington as the U.S. is sending nearly $40 billion in aid appropriated by Congress that is expected to be fully delivered by the end of September.
