EKO HOT BLOG reports on a suicide bombing incident that occurred at a mosque in Peshawar, Pakistan on Monday that has left at least 59 people dead and 150 injured.
The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, and other senior officials have risen to the occasion to strongly condemn the attack, calling it “particularly abhorrent” and a violation of the universal human right to freedom of religion.
The militant group behind the attack has risen to claim responsibility for an attack that was carried out in a crowded mosque and caused the roof to collapse on the worshipers inside.
Guterres extended his condolences to the victims’ families and wished a prompt recovery to those injured. He also reiterated the UN’s solidarity with the government and people of Pakistan in their efforts to address terrorism and violent extremism.
“It’s particularly abhorrent that the attack occurred at a place of worship,” Guterres said in a statement issued by his Spokesperson, Stephanie Dujarric.
“Freedom of religion or belief, including the ability to worship in peace and security, is a universal human right,” he added.
The High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilisations (UNAOC), Miguel Ángel Moratinos, also condemned the attack, stating that all forms of violence and acts of terror against civilians and religious sites on account of their belief or religion are intolerable and unjustifiable.
He emphasized that houses of worship are sacred places where worshippers should be able to practice and declare their faith safely and freely.
The UN’s strong condemnation of the deadly attack in Pakistan serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting religious freedom and ensuring the safety and security of all worshipers.
