UN Official Expresses Deep Concern Over Migrant Worker Abuse In Canada
Eko Hot Blog reports that United Nations’ special rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery, Tomoya Obokata, has warned that Canada’s temporary foreign worker programs are a “breeding ground” for modern forms of slavery.
Obokata made the comments after a two-week fact-finding mission to Canada, where he met with migrant workers who had been subjected to exploitation and abuse.

He said that the employer-specific work permit regimes that are used in some of Canada’s temporary foreign worker programs make migrant workers vulnerable to abuse, as they cannot report it without fear of deportation.
Obokata’s comments come after a group of Jamaican farmworkers sent a letter to the country’s labour minister in August of last year likening their treatment on two Ontario farms to “systematic slavery.”

The workers said that they were forced to work long hours in dangerous conditions, exposed to pesticides without proper protection, and verbally and physically abused by their employers.
They also said that they were threatened with deportation if they complained.
