Eko Hot Blog reports that the United Nations has raised alarm over the deaths of more than 1,200 children in Sudan refugee camps from measles and malnutrition, as the country’s health crisis deepens.
The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said that the children died in nine camps in White Nile state since May, and that the number is expected to rise due to strained resources.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) said that there have been 56 verified attacks on healthcare in Sudan since the war began, and that about 70% to 80% of hospitals in conflict states are now out of service.
The UN children’s agency (UNICEF) said that it is worried about the deaths of “many thousands of newborns” from among the 333,000 babies known to be due before the end of the year.
UNICEF spokesperson James Elder said that the children and their mothers need skilled delivery care, but that such care is becoming less likely by the day in a country where millions are either trapped in war zones or displaced, and where there are grave shortages of medical supplies.
Elder also said that every month, some 55,000 children require treatment for the worst form of malnutrition in Sudan, but that fewer than one in 50 nutrition centres are functional in the capital Khartoum and one in 10 in West Darfur.
The UN has called for urgent action to address the health crisis in Sudan, and has urged all parties to the conflict to respect international law and protect civilians.
