UN, Syria Talks Delegates In Quarantine After Positive COVID-19 Tests

Delegates for the Syrian constitutional reform talks at the UN in Geneva, were on Tuesday quarantined after a few of them tested positive for COVID-19, the Head of the opposition delegation, Hadi al-Bahra, has said.

“Health authorities in Geneva ordered the delegates to stay in their hotels for periods ranging from two to 10 days.

The opposition will continue to work using online tools,“ al-Bahra said.

However, there was no immediate comment from the office of UN Syria envoy Geir Pedersen, who had invited 15 delegates each from the government, opposition and civil society for a week-long meeting.

The talks on a new constitution are meant to build trust between the opposing sides and to create a path toward ending the civil war which has lasted for more than nine years.

Meanwhile, previous rounds of UN Syria talks ended without progress as delegations haggled over procedural issues and lobbed accusations against each other, rather than entering into any substantial negotiations.
