Attendees of legal proceedings at a magistrate court sitting in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, on Tuesday were treated to a bizarre and intimidating sight as a man conspicuously decked in babalawo regalia stormed the court premises.
For the uninitiated, ‘babalawo’ is a Yoruba spiritual title that denotes a priest of the Ifá oracle.
‘Babalawos’ are believed be clairvoyant and have the power to foretell the outcome of future occurrence. They are also believed to wield a prescient aptitude that allows them to see what the future holds for their clients through communication with supernatural beings.
Hence, court attendees were expectedly and understandably astonished when the individual donning the full ‘babalawo’ outfit arrived in the company of Omoyele Sowore, convener of the #RevolutionNow movement.
He wore a knee-length robe with red and black stripes — and a cap to match.
The robe, adorned with white cowries, had snail shells and little calabashes dangling on like light bulbs on a Christmas tree.
The ‘babalawo’ also had the head of a cat hanging down his neck.
