UNICAL: NUC Shuts Down Engineering, Other Programmes, Students To Lead Protest

  • Some students of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Cross River State, have called out the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Zana Itiunbe Akpagu, after the final-year students in some selected departments were asked to start afresh in another university.
  • The students explained that courses affected by the accreditation issue include Pharmacy, Engineering, Mass Communication, Music, and Physiotherapy.

Some students of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Cross River State, have been left devastated after the Nigerian Universities Commission shut down the Engineering faculty of the institution as well as other programmes for not obtaining due accreditation from the Commission before kicking off the programmes.

As gathered by EKO HOT BLOG, the courses affected include Pharmacy, Engineering, Mass Communication, Music, and Physiotherapy.

The students, who took to microblogging app, Twitter, to vent their spleen called out the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Zana Itiunbe Akpagu, noting that some of the affected students, who are in their final year of study have been asked to take up fresh programmes in other institutions since the Commission has rendered such programmes null and void.

According to the students, they have been paying school fees for five years without knowing that the University was yet to secure accreditation for their respective courses of study.

The students alleged that the former VC was out to ruin the future of the UNICAL students.

One of the students, @VictorIsrael, wrote, “Zana Itiunbe Akpagu the VC of the University of Calabar is out to ruin the future of UNICAL students

“Students from the Faculties of Engineering and Pharmacy have been asked to start afresh in another school because NUC didn’t accredit these departments. 5 Years wasted.

“Pharmacy, Engineering, Mass. Comm, music, Physiotherapy, and more were the departments affected. Collected school fees for 5 years without acquiring resource verification from NUC for these departments. No backup plan whatsoever. Just woke up and told students to Start afresh.

“After committing this Heinous crime against these students, He has finished his tenure as the VC now he’s planning to run at the Senate Level. Why should someone who cared less about the future of people’s children aspire to be a representative at the senate level? Wickedness!”

Neither the management of the university nor the former VC has reacted to the development as of the time of writing this report.
