A new UNICEF report shows progress in birth registration, with nearly 80 percent of children under five registered in the past five years. However, 150 million children remain unregistered, lacking official recognition.

Birth registration is crucial for a child’s legal identity, rights, and access to services like healthcare and education. However, over 50 million children with registered births still lack birth certificates.
UNICEF calls for birth registration to be the foundation of a legal identity system. The agency plans to improve accessibility through health, education, and social programs, while advocating for legal reforms to ensure equitable access and empower communities to demand registration as a basic right.
“Birth registration ensures children are immediately recognised under the law, providing a foundation for protection from harm and exploitation, as well as access to essential services like vaccines, healthcare, and education,” Russell said.
