UNICEF Calls On Nigerian Government To Expand Foundational Literacy Efforts
Eko Hot Blog reports that he United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced that it has equipped over 1.8 million Nigerian children with learning materials in the past four years, emphasizing the need for the Nigerian government to expand its foundational literacy initiatives.

Mrs. Yetunde Oluwatosin, the Education Specialist at UNICEF Nigeria, made this statement in a conversation with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
Oluwatosin discussed UNICEF’s Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) program, designed to enhance early childhood education in Nigeria. The FLN program is an innovative learning solution for both classroom and home-based teaching.
She explained, “We introduce and support states to implement teachings at the right level and approach to establish a solid educational foundation for Nigerian children. The aim is to ensure that children achieve the desired grade level with curriculum-aligned, high-quality, and inclusive teaching and learning materials.”
Oluwatosin pointed out that similar approaches have been successful in other countries, such as India, and have yielded positive results. She urged the government to enhance its partnership with UNICEF by allocating more funds to the education sector, particularly at the basic and early childhood education levels.
In the digital age, Oluwatosin stressed the importance of scaling up these educational approaches across states to ensure that Nigerian children receive a high-quality education as they progress through the education system.
She also called for continuous training and professional development for teachers, describing them as critical stakeholders. Oluwatosin emphasized the need to prepare teachers to instruct 21st-century learners effectively.
