UNILAG 55th Convocation: Tinubu Highlights Education as Key to Nigeria’s Progress

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has called on University of Lagos (UNILAG) graduates to become leaders and innovators who will help build a better Nigeria.
The President made this statement at UNILAG’s 55th Convocation Ceremony held at the J. F. Ade. Ajayi Auditorium in Akoka.

Speaking to a large audience that included Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, government officials, traditional rulers, and university leaders, Tinubu praised the graduating students for their hard work and dedication. He encouraged them to use their knowledge to solve Nigeria’s challenges, especially in technology, the economy, and the environment.
During the event, three distinguished individuals received honorary doctorate degrees for their contributions to Nigeria’s growth:
Mr. Kolawole Adesina, Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group.
Mr. Fola Adeola, OFR, a respected businessman.
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, GCON, Director-General of the World Trade Organization.
Tinubu described them as role models for the graduates and urged everyone to learn from their achievements.
The President highlighted his government’s efforts to improve education, including ₦3.52 trillion allocated to the sector in the 2025 budget. He mentioned the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which has helped many students pay for school, and promised to expand it further.
Tinubu also announced plans to install solar power at UNILAG and other schools as part of the government’s project to make campuses more sustainable.
Tinubu ended his speech by urging all Nigerians to work together to build a better country.
He reminded the graduates that their diverse backgrounds are a source of strength and called on them to be creative leaders and job creators.
“You are the future of Nigeria,” he said. “Take your responsibilities seriously, work hard, and always aim for excellence.”
The convocation was attended by many important guests, including the Oba of Lagos, Kabiyesi Oba Rilwan Akiolu, and the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, who is the Chancellor of UNILAG.

The event ended with celebrations, as graduates and their families looked forward to a bright future.
