The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has quietly taken a giant leap in Nigeria’s industrial and educational advancement by unveiling Africa’s first university-based automobile assembly plant.
Eko Hot Blog reports that in collaboration with Nord Automobiles, the Lagos-based facility, inaugurated on November 10, 2022, has been assembling vehicles and drones while also training students in cutting-edge automotive technology.
The UNILAG–Nord Auto Assembly Plant is equipped with a research and development center, assembly line, showroom, and after-sales workshop.
The initiative is designed not only to boost Nigeria’s auto industry but also to provide students with hands-on experience, positioning them as key players in the future of advanced manufacturing.

“UNILAG is committed to producing graduates who are not only employable but also job creators. This assembly plant represents our bold vision of combining academics with real-world innovation,” a university official stated.
Industry watchers have commended UNILAG’s approach, noting that rather than chasing publicity, the institution has quietly delivered results that speak for themselves, reinforcing its reputation as a hub for innovation, education, and homegrown excellence.
