‘Endure This Unintentional Hardship, Light Is Near’ – Tinubu Tells Nigerians

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has acknowledged the harsh economic realities in Nigeria, appealing to citizens to endure what he described as “unintentional hardship” caused by necessary reforms.

Speaking during the 48th convocation ceremony of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Tinubu, represented by the Special Adviser on Economy to the Vice President, Tope Fasua, reassured Nigerians of better days ahead.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that he emphasized that his administration does not take pleasure in inflicting pain and is committed to ensuring that ongoing reforms lead to long-term benefits for all citizens.

“I am not unaware of the harsh economic situation of our country, neither do I take pleasure in inflicting pain on my compatriots. However, the reality of past policies necessitated these reforms,” Tinubu stated.

He added that his administration had embraced both the assets and liabilities inherited from previous governments, avoiding blame games while focusing on reconfiguring and correcting past mistakes. Tinubu urged Nigerians to cooperate with his government, endure the current challenges, and remain hopeful for a brighter future, declaring, “I am certainly seeing the light at the end of our tunnel.”

The event also featured remarks from the Chancellor of OAU, Etsu Nupe Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, who underscored the critical role of education in driving national development. Similarly, the Pro-Chancellor, Professor Siyan Oyeweso, encouraged the 977 postgraduate graduates to leverage their knowledge for nation-building and creating opportunities for future generations.

A highlight of the convocation was the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on notable figures, including Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi, Professor Anthony Adegbulugbe, MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola, and Daere Afonya-A Akobo.
