United Nations Convoy Held Hostage in Gaza

Published

on

A United Nations convoy has been detained by Israeli forces in northern Gaza on Monday for over eight hours, sparking tensions between the two entities.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed they had intelligence suggesting Palestinian suspects were present in the convoy and delayed it for questioning.

However, the convoy was not carrying polio vaccines as initially thought, but was instead transporting UN personnel.

Despite prior coordination, the convoy was stopped at gunpoint, and bulldozers damaged the UN armored vehicles.

EDITORS PICK:

Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UNWRA, expressed concern about the incident, stating that it was the latest in a series of violations against UN staff, including shootings and arrests at checkpoints.

The convoy was carrying national and international staff members tasked with rolling out a polio vaccination campaign for children in Gaza City and northern Gaza.

It remains uncertain whether the agency can continue their work on Tuesday.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety and freedom of movement for UN personnel in Gaza.
