10 Years Later, The Unsolved Mystery Behind DaGrin’s Death

DaGrin is known by his real name, Oladapo Olaitan Olaonipekun. Until his demise, ‘Akogun,’ as he was popularly called, was a rapper from Ogun State, Nigeria.

He was born on the 25th of October, 1984 and died on 22nd of April, 2010 in Mushin, Lagos State, Nigeria.

DaGrin’s most recognized album is titled “C. E. O”, an album which greatly raised his rank in the Nigerian music industry before his death.

April 2010 was a dark time for music lovers and DaGrin fans in the country as the musician’s death made major headlines on blogs and other platforms after he was announced to have been involved in a ghastly auto accident.

According to reports released then, he was receiving treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) after he has sustained lots of injuries from the accident, however, he couldn’t survive and was officially pronounced dead by the doctors in the hospital at that time at about 8:30pm (Nigerian time).

After his death, he was buried at Atan Cemetery in Lagos, and till now, his death remains one of the biggest tragedies in the Nigerian music industry.

However, what came as a shock to people was that he released a song before his death, which he titled “If I die;” and, till now, many kept wondering whether he knew he was going to die, and in fact, he said people shouldn’t cry over his death in the song; which further raised question marks regarding his death.

When the song went viral all over the country, many tagged it as a PROPHECY, because it already gave them a hint about his death, and regardless, they were not expecting his death until it actually happened.

His death wasn’t natural but circumstantial, so, we can’t really say whether he saw a vision about the death or something; but certainly, his song titled “If I Die” created in a mystery in the minds of Nigerians, particularly due to his eventual death shortly after the song was released.

Over the years, fans and music lovers have been pouring tributes in remembrance of the late rapper; both on the precise date he died and outside that date; and today, Eko Hot Blog remembers him too.

Lots of artists sang tributes to him, including Olamide, a rapper who has been said to be DaGrin’s immediate successor.
