UPDATED: Ibadan Stampede: Court Grants Bail to Ooni’s Ex-Queen Naomi, Two Others

In a significant development at the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan today, Justice Kamorudeen Olawoyin granted bail to three prominent figures implicated in the tragic Ibadan stampede incident.

Among those granted bail are Naomi Silekunola, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, owner of Agidigbo FM, and Abdullahi Fasasi, Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun.

The ruling comes after a heated session where the defendants presented their bail applications, arguing they posed no flight risk and were fully committed to cooperating with ongoing investigations.

Counsel for Oriyomi Hamzat, Adekunle Shobaloju (SAN), affirmed the defence’s stance, emphasizing their client’s readiness to abide by legal proceedings.

Justice Olawoyin set Oriyomi Hamzat’s bail at N10 million, with stringent conditions requiring two sureties.

Crucially, the court also imposed a restriction on Agidigbo FM, preventing the broadcasting of news until further notice.

The defendants had been remanded in prison since their arrest in connection with the December 2024 tragedy, which resulted in the deaths of at least 35 children during a festive event at Islamic High School, Bashorun.

The incident sparked widespread public outcry and demands for justice from affected families and the community.

During the hearing, Oyo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abiodun Aikomo, vehemently opposed the bail applications, citing the severity of the charges and the need to ensure accountability for the victims.

Governor Seyi Makinde has echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of a fair trial while acknowledging the court’s decision to grant bail.
