Eko hot blog reports that The US has pledged an additional $100 million towards bolstering a multinational security force aimed at aiding Haitian police in combating gang violence, amidst a spiraling crisis in the Caribbean nation. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the commitment during a visit to Jamaica, highlighting the urgent need for action in addressing the “untenable situation” in Haiti.
The pledge comes as Haiti grapples with escalating violence fueled by gangs seeking to destabilize the government. With less than $11 million currently deposited into the UN’s dedicated trust fund for the security force, the international community faces mounting pressure to address the crisis. Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness emphasized the gravity of the situation, warning that the threat of civil war is now a reality that cannot be ignored.
Efforts are underway to establish a transitional council in Haiti, with discussions involving various stakeholders including political parties, civil society, and religious groups. The aim is to pave the way for the first elections since 2016 and mitigate further unrest. Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who is currently unable to return to the country US, is engaged in talks with regional leaders to address the crisis.
Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley emphasized the need for urgent action, advocating for the installation of a presidential council to oversee the formation of a new government. Meanwhile, Mexico has also contributed to the shared security fund and called for increased efforts to combat firearms trafficking in the region.
As Haiti faces a mounting humanitarian and security crisis, international support and concerted action are imperative to prevent further escalation and facilitate a path towards stability and democracy.
