US Deploys Jets, Warships as Iran Threatens Israel
The United States is set to deploy additional warships and fighter jets to the Middle East to bolster Israel’s defence capabilities against potential threats from Iran and its allies.
This move comes amid heightened tensions following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran and the killing of a senior Hezbollah commander.
The Pentagon emphasized that missile defence forces are now on heightened alert and stressed that America’s commitment to defending Israel remains “ironclad.”
Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, has promised severe retribution against Israel for Haniyeh’s assassination and has declared three days of national mourning.
Haniyeh, considered the overall leader of Hamas and a key figure in ceasefire negotiations in Gaza, was killed in Tehran on Wednesday.
Both Iran and its Gaza-based proxy have blamed Israel for the attack, although Israel has not officially commented.
Just hours prior to Haniyeh’s death, Israel announced it had killed Fuad Shukr, a top military commander of Hezbollah, Iran’s ally in Lebanon.

The Pentagon’s statement on the new deployments highlighted that these actions would “enhance US force protection, increase support for the defence of Israel, and ensure the US is prepared to respond to various contingencies.”
The deployments will include additional ballistic missile defense-capable cruisers and destroyers.
This military reinforcement follows increased deployments that began before April 13, when Iran launched an attack on Israel using drones and missiles. Nearly all of the approximately 300 drones and missiles fired were intercepted by Israel and its allies.
While Israel has not directly commented on Haniyeh’s assassination, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel had delivered “crushing blows” to its adversaries in recent days, referring to the killing of Shukr in Beirut.
He warned Israelis to brace for challenging times ahead, stating, “We are prepared for any scenario.”
Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh indicated that the US does not believe escalation is unavoidable. “We don’t want to see heightened tensions and believe there is an off-ramp here through the ceasefire deal,” Singh said.
