US Reaffirms Support for Migrants and Refugees on International Migrants Day
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has emphasized America’s ongoing commitment to supporting migrants and refugees by improving local systems, creating legal migration opportunities, and enhancing emergency responses.
Blinken highlighted how these efforts not only address global challenges but also bolster US national security, foster international collaboration, and reduce unsafe migration practices.
In a statement marking International Migrants Day, he acknowledged the vital contributions migrants make globally and the complex reasons behind migration, such as conflicts, oppressive regimes, natural disasters, violence, and persecution.
Over the past four years, Blinken said, the United States has expanded legal migration and protection programs, offering alternatives to risky journeys while holding accountable those who exploit vulnerable migrants.
“We’re enabling millions of migrants and refugees to find safety and rebuild their lives closer to their home countries. By settling in nearby regions, they can contribute to local economies without undertaking dangerous routes,” Blinken explained.
He also highlighted innovative solutions like labor migration programs, which connect skilled workers with countries in need, benefiting businesses and communities while safeguarding workers’ rights.
This approach, Blinken added, is part of a broader effort to create stability and opportunities for migrants and refugees worldwide.
