Eko Hot Blog reports that Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis, and Senator Marco Rubio have won crucial reelection races, according to US media projections.
DeSantis, a firebrand Republican, became a household name during the pandemic after pushing back against restrictions.
He thwarted Democrat Charlie Crist’s attempt to take back his old job.
With the campaign for reelection behind him, the focus of DeSantis’ political future will now turn to 2024.
A decision is looming on whether he rides his political success in Florida into a national campaign for the White House, where he may find himself on a collision course with former President Donald Trump.
According to CNN, en route to his victory, DeSantis built an unprecedented cash advantage over Crist and his $31 million campaign.
Crist struggled to gain traction after winning the primary against state Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried in late August.
The democrat attempted to make DeSantis’ known political aspirations into an issue in the race.
During their only debate, Crist challenged DeSantis to vow to serve a full four-year term if reelected as governor. DeSantis declined.
In a second term, the Republican has promised to eliminate permits to carry firearms and further “expand pro-life protections.”
Similarly, Rubio, a Republican has won a third term to the senate over Democratic Rep. Val Demings.
Rubio trailed in fundraising throughout the race and operated a low-key campaign with few public events and just one debate.
But it was enough to defeat Demings in a state that has been trending Republican since the last midterm cycle, when another Senate contest was decided in a recount.
Meanwhile, to add salt to Crist’s injury, Republican Anna Paulina Luna has won in Florida’s 13th District, the democrat’s current seat in the House of Representatives.
