Warnock and Walker headed to a runoff in the crucial Georgia Senate race.

Eko Hot Blog reports that Democratic incumbent Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker are headed to a December 6 runoff after Tuesday’s election did not return a winner.

Although Warnock is narrowly leading against Walker, a former football star endorsed by former President Donald Trump, he has not yet reached the 50% threshold needed to avoid a runoff, according to data from Edison Research.

In a Twitter post on Wednesday, Gabe Sterling, chief operating officer for Georgia secretary of state, confirmed that the Senate race is going to a runoff.

“While county officials are still doing the detailed work on counting the votes, we feel it is safe to say there will be a runoff for the US Senate here in Georgia slated for December 6,” Sterling tweeted.

A third candidate, libertarian Chase Oliver, siphoned off 2% of the vote, limiting the chances of the leading candidates to reach 50%.

Meanwhile, the Georgia Senate race may once again decide control of the US Senate.

Warnock, a pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church, the Atlanta church civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. led, had won his seat in a runoff in January 2021, giving Democrats the majority in a 50-50 Senate that requires Vice President Kamala Harris to break ties.

So far, Warnock’s campaign has spent $135.8 million, while Walker’s campaign has spent $32.4 million, according to data from the Federal Election Commission.

Democrats need to win two more seats to hold their majority in the Senate. On the other hand, Republicans need to win at least two of the remaining key races in Nevada, Georgia, and Arizona to retake the majority they lost in 2021.
