Eko Hot Blog reports that a new winter storm is set to sweep across the United States, bringing snow and other forms of wintry precipitation to parts of California, the Midwest, and the Northeast. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings for several areas that are expected to be affected by this storm, which is expected to cause significant travel disruptions and may lead to power outages in some areas.
According to the NWS, the Northeast may see up to 8 inches (20cm) of snow, with New York City getting between 2 to 6 inches of snow. The snow began falling on Monday evening and is expected to turn into a mix of sleet and rain into Tuesday morning. As a result, the NWS has issued a travel advisory for New Yorkers from 6:00 pm on Monday to 2:00 pm on Tuesday, urging people to use mass transit whenever possible and to allow extra time for their commutes.
Although New York City will be on the southern edge of the heaviest snowfall, it is still likely to be the biggest snowstorm of the season so far. The NWS has advised residents to prepare for the possibility of power outages and to avoid driving unless absolutely necessary.
The winter storm warnings also cover all of Connecticut and Rhode Island, and heavy snow across the Northeast is expected to come to an end on Wednesday, according to the NWS.
This winter storm comes after a spate of tornadoes and powerful winds that hit the central US on Sunday and Monday in states like Oklahoma, Missouri, and Texas, where residents were urged to seek shelter. In Oklahoma, seven tornadoes were reported to have hit the state late on Sunday, one of them deadly. Local news media reported that a 62-year-old man died in the western region of the state due to the storm.
The NWS and experts have said that the weather pattern probably qualifies as a “derecho,” a rare weather pattern characterized by extremely strong straight-line winds. A wind speed of 114mph (183km/h) was recorded in northern Texas near the border with Oklahoma – the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane.
Parts of Michigan, where more than 158,000 people remained without power after a winter storm last week, were hit again with freezing rain and strong winds on Monday.
The winter storm is expected to have a significant impact on travel across the country, with airlines already canceling hundreds of flights in anticipation of the snow and other weather-related issues.
The snow and ice could also lead to power outages and make roads and sidewalks slippery and hazardous.
Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid driving unless absolutely necessary, and to keep an eye on weather updates from local authorities. They should also take precautions to ensure that they have enough food, water, and emergency supplies in case of a power outage or other emergencies.
In conclusion, the winter storm is expected to bring significant disruptions to travel, power, and daily life across several states in the United States. It is important for residents to take necessary precautions and stay safe during this time.
