US Prepares to Call Out Russia for Election Interference

The Biden administration is gearing up to accuse Russia of a widespread campaign to interfere in the upcoming presidential election, according to US media reports.

The Kremlin’s efforts to shape public opinion will be met with a series of actions, including criminal charges, targeting Russian state media network RT and other entities.

Attorney General Merrick Garland is expected to announce sanctions and charges on Wednesday, marking a significant escalation in the US response to foreign election interference.

Meanwhile, researchers have uncovered a Chinese influence operation aimed at infiltrating US political conversations on social media.

As the US prepares to confront Russia over its election interference, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency director Jen Easterly warns that foreign adversaries will stop at nothing to undermine American democracy.

“It’s up to all of us to ensure they’re not successful,” she says.

The US has a history of grappling with Russian election interference, dating back to the 2016 presidential election when Russia’s sophisticated campaign helped tip the scales in Trump’s favor.

Since then, US politicians and intelligence officials have concluded that Vladimir Putin directly ordered the operation, leading to charges against 12 Russian military intelligence officers.
