United States Senator for Kentucky, Rand Paul, has sparked a political uproar by endorsing tech billionaire Elon Musk as the next Speaker of the House.

In a bold statement on his official X account on Thursday, Paul highlighted that the Speaker of the House does not need to be a sitting member of Congress, paving the way for unconventional suggestions.
“The Speaker of the House need not be a member of Congress,” Paul emphasized. “Nothing would disrupt the swamp more than electing Elon Musk. Think about it. Nothing’s impossible—not to mention the joy at seeing the collective establishment, aka ‘uniparty,’ lose their ever-lovin’ minds.”
Paul’s endorsement comes as House Speaker Mike Johnson faces mounting criticism from within the GOP over his handling of a crucial year-end spending package.
The proposed measure, backed by Speaker Johnson on Tuesday, sought to fund the government through March 14. It included over $100 billion for disaster relief and $10 billion in economic assistance for farmers, alongside provisions for health care reform and enhanced transparency in live event ticketing.
The spending plan has drawn fierce backlash from top Republican figures, including President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance. In a joint statement issued Wednesday, Trump and Vance lambasted the plan, describing it as the “most foolish and inept thing” Republicans have done in Congress. They warned that it risks allowing the country to reach the debt ceiling in 2025.
Elon Musk, recently tapped by Trump to co-lead the incoming administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has also voiced strong opposition to the bill. Taking to X on Wednesday, Musk urged voters to hold lawmakers accountable for supporting what he called an “outrageous” proposal.
“Any lawmaker backing this bill should be voted out in two years,” Musk declared, adding in another post, “This bill should not pass.”
As the Friday deadline to avert a government shutdown looms, Speaker Johnson’s team is reportedly working on a backup spending plan, according to Politico. Despite efforts to manage the crisis, internal GOP divisions have raised doubts about Johnson’s ability to unite the party behind his leadership.
Senator Rand Paul’s suggestion to bring Musk into the fold has only added fuel to the fire, igniting debates over whether the unconventional move could redefine the role of the Speaker—or simply deepen existing political divides.
With his disruptive vision and unorthodox ideas, Musk represents a potential shake-up in Washington’s entrenched political order. Whether Paul’s endorsement gains traction remains to be seen, but the prospect of Elon Musk as Speaker is sure to keep tongues wagging in the coming weeks.
