Eko Hot Blog reports that United States secured a 2-0 victory over Mexico In Sunday’s CONCACAF Nations League final, with goals from Gio Reyna and Tyler Adams, giving the Americans all three titles in the event’s history.
Adams unleashed a powerful shot from afar just before halftime, while Reyna capitalized on a loose ball near the edge of the box in the 63rd minute.
It marks the third consecutive Nations League title for the Americans, having triumphed in 2021 and 2023.
“It never gets old winning titles for your country. I’ll never take any of them for granted,” Reyna said.
“The group of guys and the energy we have, I always love coming to camp. I’m at a loss for words right now.”
Reyna hoped the “Three-peat” would provide inspiration for competing in Copa America on home soil this summer against South America’s top teams.
“It’s big for momentum,” he said. “We’ve been together with our core group now. We know what it takes to win big matches.
“We can hopefully keep the momentum going into Copa America and maybe lift a trophy there.”
In the 73rd minute, Mexico seemed to have a chance to turn the tide when a penalty was granted following a foul by US defender Antonee Robinson on Santiago Gimenez in the box.
However, after a video review, the decision was overturned, with Gimenez receiving a yellow card for simulation, dampening Mexico’s hopes for a comeback.
The match saw interruptions in the 86th minute and twice during stoppage time due to discriminatory language from Mexican fans, who hurled homophobic insults when the opposing goalkeeper took goal kicks.
After the final whistle in Arlington, Texas, the United States clinched the championship title on the home turf of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.
This victory adds to their previous successes in the CONCACAF Nations League, where they triumphed in the inaugural championship match in 2021 against Mexico with a 3-2 victory in extra time, and secured a 2-0 win over Canada in last year’s final following a 3-0 win against Mexico in the semi-finals.
Although Mexico maintains a historical lead in the rivalry with 37 wins to the United States’ 24, with 17 draws, the US men extended their unbeaten streak against Mexico to seven matches across all competitions, boasting five wins and two draws.
