Ms. Melissa Jones, the Mission Director for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Nigeria, visited the Lekki Waterworks facility of the Lagos Water Corporation (LWC) on Friday, November 1, 2024, to mark the forthcoming rehabilitation of critical water infrastructure.

Ms. Jones was welcomed by LWC’s Managing Director, Engr. Mukhtaar Temitope Tijani, who was joined by the Chief of Party for the Lagos Urban Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (LUWASH) program, James Racicot, and Deputy Chief of Party, Soni Elisha.

The Lekki Waterworks is one of five key facilities slated for refurbishment under the USAID-funded LUWASH initiative, which focuses on modernizing Lagos State’s water infrastructure to improve access to clean, reliable water.

This five-year partnership between USAID and the Lagos State Government is expected to make significant strides in enhancing water quality and availability for Lagos residents.

The Lagos Water Corporation expressed appreciation for USAID’s dedication to sustainable urban development and its ongoing support in achieving LWC’s mission to deliver safe water across the city.

As announced previously, the Lagos State Government secured a five-year USAID grant to revitalize water infrastructure throughout the state.

These upgrades will enhance water availability, minimize service disruptions, and strengthen sanitation standards.

In its first phase, the LUWASH program will oversee the rehabilitation of five mini waterworks, expanding safe water supply for communities such as Badore, Lekki, Victoria Island, Victoria Island Annex, and Ajegunle.

The subsequent phase will extend this effort to other waterworks in Bariga, Iwaya, Ikeja, Ikate, Ajangbadi, and Meiran, ensuring a wider reach of enhanced water services across Lagos.
