Former Manchester United forward, Robin Van Persie, has stated his disappointment with the decision of Sir Alex Ferguson to retire the time he did as coach of the Premier League club.
During talks regarding his move from Arsenal to United in 2012, the former Netherlands international said the legendary coach told him that he’d be staying on at Manchester United for three more seasons.
In the end, Ferguson, who won 13 league titles with United during his trophy-laden reign, only stayed for one more year as the club won the Premier League title in 2012/13 before retiring from football.
Speaking with Planet Football, Van Persie said: “I did ask him the question how long his intentions as to stay and he said three years so that was in my mind when I decided to make the move from Arsenal.”
Asked if knowing ahead would have affected his choice, he stated: “Would I have changed my decision if I knew Sir Alex would be leaving at the end of that season? It is a good question and one that I can’t answer.
“He was one of the big reasons why I signed, for sure. He was a legendary manager and you could see from the moment I walked into the club that everything was working perfectly under him.
“The connection between the players and the coach was good. Everything fitted for me and this is why I scored 26 goals in my first season and we won the Premier League by 11 points.
