Venezuelan government has recalled its ambassador to Spain, Gladys Gutierrez, and summoned Spanish Ambassador to Venezuela, Ramon Santos, to appear before the foreign ministry.
This decision was announced by Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil on Thursday via Telegram.
Gil cited “insolent, interventionist, and rude” comments made by Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles as the motivation behind this move.
Robles had earlier referred to the Venezuelan administration as a “dictatorship”, according to local media reports.

The diplomatic tension between the two nations has been further exacerbated by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s meeting with Venezuela’s self-exiled opposition leader, Edmundo Gonzalez, in Madrid.
This meeting took place a day after the Spanish parliament’s lower house voted to recognize Gonzalez as the winner of the contested presidential election.
The Venezuelan opposition has released detailed vote tallies, indicating a resounding victory for Gonzalez.
However, the national elections authority has not published the detailed votes and instead declared incumbent President Nicolas Maduro the winner.
Maduro has dismissed international criticism, labeling it a right-wing plot.
