A fallen 33,000 litre tanker marked KRD280XN attracted some residents of Victoria Island, Lagos on Friday morning as they trooped out with kegs and scooped diesel from  the tanker which was said to have had tyre burst while in motion around 5am along Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue.

It was gathered that the two compartments of 11,000 litres each detached from the truck and fell on the ground spilling fuel on the highway.

A number of residents and street urchins swathed the tanker with jerry cans leaching on the inflammable content.

But for the timely intervention of the police, who chased the young people away and seized some of the jerry cans, there would have been an explosion with devastating casualties on the busy expressway.

It was gathered that the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), federal and state fire services, paramedics and policemen cordoned off the area afterwards, diverting traffic to other routes.

According to the Director General LASEMA Dr. Femi Oke-Osayintolu, the tanker driver sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital by paramedics.
