EKO HOT BLOG reports that Nigerian footballer Victor Osimhen has been playing with a protective mask since returning to the pitch after sustaining a fracture on his cheekbone and eye socket during a Serie A match between Napoli and Inter Milan in 2021.
However, according to surgeon Gianpaolo Tartaro, who performed facial surgery on Osimhen, there is no reason for the striker to continue wearing the mask.
Tartaro expressed confusion as to why Osimhen still wears the protective mask, saying, “Superstition? I don’t know. It was modeled and remodeled with the assistance of the player so that it doesn’t create the slightest discomfort.”
Despite the surgeon’s comments, Osimhen has continued to wear the mask during games. The Nigeria international has been a key player for Napoli this season, scoring 21 goals in 25 appearances across all competitions.
Osimhen’s injury occurred during a head clash with Inter Milan defender Skriniar in November 2021. He underwent surgery shortly after and returned to training in January 2022, wearing the protective mask during matches since then.
While some fans may view the mask as a hindrance, Osimhen has continued to perform at a high level for Napoli. His goal-scoring record this season has helped the team stay in contention for a top-four finish in Serie A and a spot in next season’s Champions League.
