Vinicius recorded 24 goals and 11 assists across competitions during that campaign. The
This triumph comes after Vinicius and Real Madrid boycotted the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony in protest, following his defeat to Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri.
However, the FIFA award provided a more uplifting conclusion to his season.
Reflecting on his journey, Vinicius said, “It seemed impossible when I played barefoot in the streets of São Gonçalo, and now I’m here.”
The Ballon d’Or and FIFA Best Awards are widely regarded as the two most prestigious individual honors in football.
This year’s FIFA award, covering performances between August 2023 and August 2024, was decided by a weighted voting process: 25% from public votes, 25% from journalists (one from each country), and the remaining 50% split between the captains and managers of national teams worldwide.
Vinicius edged out tough competition for the award. Spain’s Euro 2024-winning midfielder Rodri finished second, while Real Madrid’s England star Jude Bellingham claimed third place.
Voting patterns reflected varied preferences: England captain Harry Kane picked Rodri as his first choice, followed by Bellingham and Vinicius.
Lee Carsley, interim England manager during the voting period, ranked Bellingham, Rodri, and Barcelona’s young sensation Lamine Yamal in his top three.
Meanwhile, Wales captain Aaron Ramsey selected Vinicius as his top pick, while Scotland’s manager Steve Clarke and Wales boss Craig Bellamy both backed Rodri.
Brazil’s captain and coach both cast their votes for Vinicius, but Spain’s captain and manager surprisingly chose Real Madrid’s right-back Dani Carvajal.
The awards night also celebrated Barcelona and Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmatí, who won the FIFA Women’s Player of the Year award for the second consecutive year.
Bonmatí was instrumental in Barcelona’s domestic and international triumphs and Spain’s victorious Women’s World Cup campaign.
