EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Lagos Police Department has reacted to a viral video in which two of its policemen were shown assaulting a Kuda bank customer.

On Wednesday, the command’s spokesperson, Ben Hundeyin, disclosed via Twitter that a fraudulent transaction occurred in the customer’s account, and they obtained a court order to freeze it.

He claimed that when Qudus Abdulgafar, a Kuda bank customer, arrived at the bank, he chose to create a spectacle in the banking hall.

After a video leaked on Tuesday showing two men in police uniform punching a customer, there was outrage.

In the footage, the customer is seen lying on the floor while one of the two police officers attempts to arrest him by holding his trousers.

Qudus, a POS operator, went to the Lagos-based bank on Tuesday to enquire why his account had been frozen, according to AbdulGafar Jamiu, the victim’s elder sibling.

Instead, the cops tear-gassed the Kuda bank customer, wounded him, and detained him.

Mr Jamiu had transferred N577,491 from his Moniepoint account to his Kuda account on April 13, but the bank had reported the transaction.

Police retaliated that Abdulqudus went to the bank and made a commotion. “Of course, police personnel were dispatched to help,” Mr Hundeyin explained.

“In an attempt to resist the authorities, Kuda bank customer, Abdulqudus, assaulted them (a criminal offence), ripping one button off a police officer’s clothing.

“Abuqudus was detained, arrested, and handed over to the team investigating the fraudulent transaction on his account, as allowed by law for police officers to use minimal force to achieve an arrest.”

Mr Hundeyin stated that he met with the detainee’s relatives and lawyer and that the viral video did not capture how the customer created a commotion prior to the police officers’ intervention.

“It’s unfortunate that the existing cameras don’t reveal what happened before the cops arrived. Abdulqudus is currently in the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti Lagos, where the investigation is ongoing,” he stated
