The viral video was circulating on social media with different reactions from Nigerians.

A few weeks ago, the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, announced a redesign of the new Naira notes. The new redesign notes were unveiled by President Muhammadu Buhari last Wednesday.

In the viral video that surfaced online, most of the damaged notes were in the N1,000 denomination.

Recall that on October 26, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele said the apex bank will issue redesigned N200, N500, and N1,000 notes, effective December 15, 2022, while the new and existing currencies will remain legal tender and circulate together until January.

According to the Governor, some of the factors that influenced the redesign of the naira notes is the “significant hoarding of banknotes by members of the public.” He added that statistics show that “over 80 percent of currency in circulation are outside the vaults of commercial banks”.

Meanwhile, various reactions have trailed the discovery of the damaged Naira notes abandoned in bags.

According to Ukanwa Iheanacho, the damaged money might have been kept by kidnappers who received ransom in cash.

“You might be right, but the money may not necessarily be looted; it could be a businessman that doesn’t go to the bank, it could be from kidnappers that receive cash.”

Hussain Salisu‬ said, “Although we don’t rule out the possibility of it being a loot.”

On his own part, Nwafor Obiechina maintained that “No businessman can keep money like that. Businesses need money for turnover. Even if he doesn’t use the bank. It won’t be dirty and old like this. Because their money is used for exchange and settlement of debts.”
