Speaking on BT Sport after the match, Peter Crouch expressed his disappointment in Van Dijk’s performance, saying: “Van Dijk seems to give up, Trent Alexander-Arnold switches off, and it is too, too easy for Bournemouth.”
Joe Cole also joined in the criticism, noting that the Dutchman failed to switch on after making a mistake. “It is a simple ball over the top. He gets back in, but now he needs to switch on; he should be in business. When have we ever seen Virgil van Dijk just stroll past someone in that situation? He just switches off. Look at that reaction; you don’t want that from your captain.”
The loss was a significant blow to Liverpool, who are currently battling for a top-four finish in the Premier League. The Reds will now shift their focus to their upcoming Champions League clash with Real Madrid on Wednesday, hoping to turn around their fortunes and advance to the quarter-finals of the competition.
Van Dijk, who is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the world, will undoubtedly be looking to bounce back and prove his worth in Liverpool’s crucial midweek fixture.
