VP Shettima Arrives New York for UNGA 79th Summit

Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has arrived in New York to represent the country at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The announcement was made in a statement on Monday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President).

Shettima touched down at John F. Kennedy International Airport in the early hours of Monday.

He was welcomed by a delegation that included the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, along with Kashifu Inuwa, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency, Nigerian diplomats, UN officials, and other dignitaries.

Following directives from President Bola Tinubu, Shettima is heading Nigeria’s delegation to the assembly. The vice president will present the country’s statement and participate in high-level meetings with global leaders.

The 79th session of the UNGA is crucial, focusing on accelerating progress towards achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Central to the discussions is the “Summit of the Future,” which underscores the need for enhanced global cooperation to tackle issues like climate change, poverty, inequality, and the effects of conflicts and health crises.

From September 23 to 27, the UN’s Department of Global Communications will host the SDG Media Zone, featuring interviews and discussions on key challenges facing the world. During this time, Heads of State and Government will convene to address gaps in global governance exposed by recent crises.

The summit will aim to reinforce commitments to the SDGs and the UN Charter while fostering stronger global collaboration to meet current and future challenges.

A key outcome will be the “Pact for the Future,” a framework aimed at bolstering multilateral cooperation to address pressing global issues.
