The West African Examination Council (WAEC) was scrutinized during an investigative hearing on Tuesday, where the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Examination Bodies questioned Josiah Dangut, the Head of WAEC Nigeria, about a ₦6 billion deficit the agency incurred in 2023.
The committee also inquired about a ₦5 billion loan WAEC had taken in 2022 to purchase personalized calculators.

Dangut was accompanied by WAEC’s Deputy Director of Finance, Senior Deputy Registrar Victor Odu, and Acting Director of Finance Segun Jerumeh.
According to report, the committee rejected the cashbook WAEC presented and demanded that the agency submit its bank statements. The committee required WAEC to provide all bank statements from 2018 to the present within a week, citing insufficient responses from the officials.
Committee member Awaji-Inombek Abiante emphasized the need for accountability, accusing WAEC of being uncooperative. “WAEC Nigeria has been an uncooperative witness in this process, shielding and denying Nigerians the value of the country’s investment in that office.
They must submit all bank account statements to this committee for further investigation,” Abiante stated.
The committee expressed frustration that only one of the eight requested submissions—the nominal roll—had been provided. The panel also demanded an explanation for WAEC’s N40 billion expenditure in 2023, despite generating only N34 billion in revenue. Additionally, the committee questioned how a ministerial board could fail to authorize a loan as substantial as N5 billion, let alone the examination body itself.
The committee further requested details regarding the number of students who took the 2022 exams for which the calculators were purchased. They also insisted that WAEC submit all correspondence related to the acquisition of the calculators, as well as proof of authorization for the ₦5 billion loan.
