With the unveiling of a new Plastic Waste Management Policy, Wahab has sustained his calls for a transformative overhaul of the plastic lifecycle.

“For years now, I have maintained – it is not enough to recycle or clean up the mess. The root causes must be addressed,” Wahab asserted firmly. “We must relentlessly rethink how these plastics are produced, consumed and disposed of.”

The new policy underscores Lagos’ commitment to facilitate a crucial transition – moving away from an unsustainable linear plastic economy towards a more circular model.

However, Wahab has consistently stressed this systemic change requires collective action and accountability from all quarters.

“Time and again, I have emphasized solutions demand a multi-pronged approach…Government, businesses, communities and individuals must all take responsibility,” he stated. “Producers must innovate manufacturing, consumers must adapt habits, regulators must enforce compliance.”

Wahab’s sustained rallying cry follows the positive impacts of Lagos’ ban on styrofoam and single-use plastics.

Yet, he has continually maintained more transformative steps are vital to holistically protect the environment and public well-being.
