Bukavu, DR Congo – M23 rebels have captured an airport 30km (19 miles) north of Bukavu as they continue their advance toward the strategic city.
The Congolese army and its allied militia withdrew without much resistance, allowing the rebels to take control of the key facility.
Despite the fall of the airport, heavy clashes erupted on the outskirts of Bukavu, with local authorities urging residents to remain indoors for their safety.
The capture of Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province, would mark a major turning point in the conflict, further destabilizing the mineral-rich region.
The DR Congo government has accused Rwanda of supporting M23 to exploit its natural resources, a claim Rwanda denies. At the Munich Security Conference, DR Congo’s President Félix Tshisekedi called for sanctions against Rwanda, vowing to protect the country’s strategic resources.
Meanwhile, the African Union (AU) is set to discuss the escalating crisis at its summit in Ethiopia. AU Commission head Moussa Faki Mahamat has called for an immediate ceasefire, warning that military action will not bring a lasting solution.
As the rebels push closer to Bukavu, tensions continue to rise, and the humanitarian crisis worsens.
