WhatsApp is one of the breakthroughs in the social media space the world has encountered.
Since its initial release in January 2009, the company has grown exponentially and has become the world’s most popular application for messaging since 2015, after its acquisition by Facebook Inc.
WhatsApp has over 2 Billion users worldwide, and processes tonnes of data daily. According to statistics for August 22, 2014, WhatsApp was said to have processed over 700 million photos and 100 million videos, in addition to more than 10 billion messages each day.
Due to the enormous data that it processes, as well as the information of their users that they house, the issue of privacy and data security is paramount.
Though WhatsApp was initially not offering encryption services, one reason for which it received massive criticism, the company plugged that hole in April 0f 2016, when it implemented full end-to-end encryption.
Despite its terms and privacy policy already in place, the company continues to update it as time goes on, to better meet the current realities, and WhatsApp just sent me a notification to that effect.

In the notification, the company reiterated that they as a company cannot read or listen to my conversation, one of the huge benefits of the end-to-end encryption, which they said would never change.
They also added that the company would be adding more information in their policy, which would include information about how one can chat with business accounts and how businesses, with the use of Facebook tools, can manage their chats.
The update would also be addressing how they would be processing their users’ data, with the sole purpose of keeping their accounts safe, EKO HOT BLOG gathered.
In addition to that, the update would highlight how they would be connecting with Facebook in other to offer new products and services.
The main point in the update notification is that the said update would go into effect on the 15th day of May 2021 and that the only way to continue using WhatsApp beyond the said date is for users to click the “ACCEPT” button to accept the update.
Take a look at a screenshot of the notification I received:
So, if you have received this notification and have not yet accepted the new WhatsApp terms and privacy policy update, you have till the 15th of May, 2021 to do that, else, your account would likely be blocked.
