Watermelon is a delicious and low-calorie summer fruit. It can help you keep hydrated as well as contains critical nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Watermelon’s high water content might help you keep hydrated
It contains approximately 90% water, making it ideal for staying hydrated in the heat.
Watermelon is also high in antioxidants. These compounds can aid in the removal of molecules known as free radicals, or reactive species, from the body.
During natural activities such as metabolism, the body generates free radicals. They can also be caused by smoking, air pollution, stress, and other environmental factors.
1. Asthma prevention
According to some specialists, free radicals play a role in the development of asthma. Certain antioxidants in the lungs, such as vitamin C, may lessen the chance of developing asthma.
Although studies have not proven that taking vitamin C pills will help prevent asthma, a vitamin C-rich diet may give some protection.
2. Maintain High blood pressure
Researchers discovered that watermelon extract reduced blood pressure in and around the ankles of middle-aged people with obesity and early hypertension. The authors hypothesised that L-citrulline and L-arginine, two antioxidants found in watermelon, could improve artery function.
Another antioxidant found in watermelon, lycopene, may help protect against heart disease. According to a review, it may do so through lowering inflammation associated with high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or “good” cholesterol.
Phytosterols are plant chemicals that may aid in the management of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), also known as “bad” cholesterol.
3. Cancer prevention
According to studies, free radicals can contribute to the development of some forms of cancer. They can induce DNA cell damage due to the oxidative stress they create.
Watermelon’s dietary antioxidants, such as vitamin C, may help prevent cancer by combating free radicals. Some research has also connected lycopene consumption to a decreased risk of prostate cancer.
4. Regularity and digestion
Watermelon has high water content and also contains fibre. These nutrients aid in the maintenance of a healthy gut by reducing constipation and supporting regular bowel movements.
