EKO HOT BLOG reports that the United States government has congratulated Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on his victory at the 2023 presidential election in Nigeria.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Tinubu the winner of the election on Wednesday, March 1, defeating the main opposition candidates, Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).
In a statement released by the United States Department spokesman, Ned Price, the US government congratulated the people of Nigeria, President-elect Tinubu and all political leaders. The statement described the election as a new period for Nigerian politics and democracy.
Price also acknowledged the discontent among some Nigerians over the validity of the results. He said, “We understand that many Nigerians and some of the parties have expressed frustration about the manner in which the process was conducted. Nigerians are clearly within their rights to have such concerns and should have high expectations for their electoral process.”
The US government called on all parties to refrain from violence or inflammatory rhetoric at this critical time. The statement further stated that the US would continue to support Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its democracy and promote peace and prosperity for all Nigerians.
Tinubu’s victory has been received with mixed reactions from Nigerians, with some expressing satisfaction while others raised concerns about the credibility of the election. However, the congratulatory message from the US government is seen as a significant boost to Tinubu’s credibility and international recognition of his victory.
It is expected that other world leaders will follow suit in congratulating the President-elect in the coming days.
