The NFF appointed Finidi George as the head coach of the Super Eagles on Monday, April 29, two months after the contract of Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro ended on February 29.
Reports suggested that Finidi George, who may also retain his position as the technical adviser of Enyimba of Aba, signed a one-year contract with the NFF, including an option for a one-year extension.
Initially, there were reports of the NFF contemplating hiring a foreign tactician.
However, the announcement from the federal government, stating its responsibility for coaches’ salaries, reportedly prompted the federation to focus on domestic options.
Despite initial indications suggesting otherwise, Finidi George, who had served as the assistant coach of the Super Eagles for 20 months and acted as the interim coach in March, seemed unlikely to be appointed.
His former national team teammate, Emmanuel Amuneke, was considered the frontrunner.
Nevertheless, the 53-year-old former Ajax player ultimately secured the position.
“It wasn’t an easy decision,” Gusau told former Super Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye during an interview.
“We’ve to begin to trust our own. We will give Finidi all the respect and support he needs.”
