Protests: Military Will Step in if... – CDS

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has issued a stern warning against any actions that could lead to chaos under the guise of a nationwide protest.

Eko Hot Blog gathered that Edward Buba, the director of defence media operations, during a press briefing on Thursday, stated that the “contemporary context” of the planned protest in Nigeria appears to mimic recent events in Kenya.

Buba affirmed that while the constitution grants citizens the right to peaceful assembly, it does not permit them to incite anarchy or terror.

He disclosed that the military has uncovered plans by certain “unscrupulous elements” to infiltrate the protest and incite violence.

“I will say that the contemporary context of this planned protest is to shadow what is happening in Kenya and I will add that what is happening in Kenya in terms of protest, one, it is violence, two, it remains unresolved as we speak,” Buba said.

“Already, we have detected some unscrupulous elements bent on hijacking the planned protest with the aim of making it violent. Many are therefore following in ignorance.”

Reports indicate that a youth-led nationwide protest is being organized in response to the severe economic hardships, with plans to start on August 1.

In response, the federal government and President Bola Tinubu have urged the protest leaders to cancel the demonstration.

Buba emphasized that the anticipated violence associated with the planned protest would lead to a “state of anarchy” and stated that the armed forces will not tolerate any actions that could destabilize the nation.

“The armed forces, on its part, would not stand by and allow anarchy to befall our nation. This is because we have seen and witnessed anarchy in countries we have operated,” he concluded.
