Wear Media Outfits – Police Warns Journalists Covering Protest

The FCT police command has advised journalists covering the ongoing nationwide protests against economic hardship to wear their media organization’s attire to avoid being mistaken for protesters.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that some Nigerians organised a 10-day nationwide protest against what they termed as #EndBadGovernance and took to the streets on Thursday to express their demands.

On Saturday, the third day of the demonstration, protesters in Abuja gathered at Moshood Abiola Stadium with flags and placards.

However, police at the stadium, the protest venue, fired into the air, released teargas, and dispersed the protesters.

Masked operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) were also present at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in seven vehicles.

As the police arrested people on the ground, other operatives shot at protesters and journalists, causing them to run for cover.

Bullets struck a car carrying journalists away from the location.

SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, issued a brief statement on Sunday night, saying that the commissioner of police, CP Benneth Igweh, had instructed her to inform journalists covering the protests to bring a valid means of identification.

“The Commissioner of Police FCT Command directed me to inform all pressmen who intend to go out and cover the ongoing national protests to adequately dress in the attire of their respective media organizations and also come along with a valid means of identification,” the statement read.
