We’re Surprised Our Late Student Fell For A Scammer Despite Our Moral Instructions – UNILORIN

Eko Hot Blog reports that the Management of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Ilorin, Nigeria, has reacted to the death of a student, Sanni Hameedat, who committed suicide after lending a boy she met on a social media platform, Snapchat, the sum of N500,000.

The university management said they were surprised that Hameedat fell for the suspected fraudster despite the “moral and academic instructions” inculcated in their students.

The deceased died in her hostel after ingesting a poisonous substance. She was undergoing her SIWES programme before the incident happened.

Eko Hot Blog gathered that the money Hameedat lent the boy was for her mother. In a desperation to recoup the money, she approached multiple loan sharks to borrow money.

The management of the private hostel — Rubiks Hostels — where she resided in confirmed in a circulated message on WhatsApp that the cause of her death was connected to the pressure from the loan app agents, who were demanding quick repayment, coupled with her brother’s inability to assist her financially, which led to depression.

In a statement issued by the Director of Corporate Affairs, UNILORIN, Kunle Akogun, on Wednesday, the institution appeared to blame the victim, wondering why one of its students could have associated with “such undesirable element of a supposed boyfriend, and even went ahead to take the extreme step of taking her own life.”

The university, which described itself as “a bastion of moral and academic education,” added that it was sad to receive the news of the death.

“The management of the University of Ilorin has received with sadness the death of one of the university students, Sanni Hameedat, by suicide allegedly over a failed financial transaction,” the statement reads in part.

“The cause of suicide was traced to financial misappropriation. She was entrusted with a significant sum of money by her mother. She crossed paths with a guy on Snapchat and developed a friendship.”

The university’s spokesperson described the incident as “a most horrible way to die, especially for a promising young lady who had every opportunity before her to make it big in life.”

He further stated that the university management sympathised with the parents, siblings, friends, and colleagues of the deceased and prayed that God gives them the fortitude to bear the loss.

“The management will counsel the students of the university to be wary of the company they keep in order not to fall into the traps of scammers,” Akogun said.

“The University of Ilorin is reputed to be a bastion of moral and academic education and we are surprised that any of our students, upon all the moral and academic instructions inculcated in them, could have associated with such undesirable element of a supposed boyfriend, and even went ahead to take the extreme step of taking her own life.”

Meanwhile, the UNILORIN management did not reveal whether it would work with security agencies to apprehend the suspected fraudster who triggered the student’s death.
