‘We’ve Lot Of Them In Other States’ — Reactions Trail Oyo “Ghost Worker” Scandal
The social media has been awash with different reactions over the payroll fraud that is rocking Oyo State government.
Eko Hot Blog had reported how a permanent secretary in the state was fingered in ghost worker racketeer following an altercation on twitter between the son of the permanent secretary and a twitter user.
Ayobami Agboola, son of Amidat Agboola, Oyo state head of civil service, was accused of failing to include the name of an acquaintance in a list of “ghost workers” in the state.
Ghost workers or payroll fraud are common practice among public office holders, especially civil servants, in Nigeria.

It is a list of people on the government payroll who are not physically present to do the actual work.
Sulaimon Adesola, a “social media influencer” said to have been involved in the campaign team of Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo state, accused Agboola of promising to use his mother’s influence to help include his name on the “list”, but he failed to do so.
Adesola also backed up his claim with screenshots of messages they exchanged.
In his defence, Agboola claimed that he didn’t really have any ghost worker slot, as the comment was made jocularly.
Good Morning Everyone, Sometime in February last year, @advsola approached me to help him with any gig, as the current gig he was working with me ended, he suggested A Government gig that can keep him less busy.

Have built the impression that those with money can never be wrong. Our loyalties are up for sale to the highest bidder & our rants finds expression when we feel we are not getting a piece of the action.

Let's imagine that this crook and his gang has 200 #ghostworkers on the scheme earning N40,000 monthly. That's N8m monthly, N96m annually. This is how they fleece the govt of funds meant for basic amenities. On TL they are apostles, in their homes, they are robbers. pic.twitter.com/eQ7aIAgfE0

The problem of ghost workers cuts to the core of the challenge of fighting corruption in Nigeria, and as such does not have a simple solution because it is robust and many political stakeholders continue to benefit from the current system.
