EDITOR’S PICKS:

Bakre plays the lead character, Obalola, a street king with a traumatic past. In an interview with the Menisms audiovisual podcast, he revealed that it was his first time playing a lead role and the first time he let himself fully embody a character. Bakre said he found it challenging to play a strong character who also had moments of vulnerability.

To prepare for the emotional scenes, Bakre said he drank two bottles of strong herbal bitters in quick succession, as well as listening to sad music to put himself in the right frame of mind. He also visited a nearby graveyard, rubbing sand on his face and rolling on the floor to get into character.

Bakre’s efforts paid off, as he was able to fully immerse himself in the role, even struggling to leave the character behind after the shoot. Bakre also revealed that after one emotional scene, some members of the crew were moved to tears.
