What Herdsmen Should Do If South Opposes Ranching – Arewa Voice

A northern sociopolitical group, Voice of Arewa, has advised herdsmen on what to do if authorities in southern states are not forthcoming regarding the issue of ranch creation.

The Chairman of the group, Salisu Gezawa, implored the herdsmen to return to the north if there’s no willingness to holistically address the farmers-herders imbroglio by making substantial ranching provisions for them in the south.

Speaking during an interactive session with newsmen in Lagos, Gezawa admonished farmers and herders in the south-west to co-exist peacefully.

He suggested that the two parties should embrace the Rural Grazing Area (RUGA) settlement for Fulani herdsmen introduced by President Muhamadu Buhari.

According to him, the initiative would go a long way in addressing insecurity in the region. Buhari had suspended RUGA in 2019 following outrage and vehement opposition by southerners against the policy.

Gezawa noted that ranching was an ubiquitous practice in other countries even though it was staunchly kicked against by some state governments in the south-west, south-east and south-south.

“Ranching is the best thing we can do to ensure peace. But if the southern region refuses, let the herdsmen take the policy to where there are lands in the north so there will be peace,” he said.

The Secretary of Arewa Community in APC Lagos, Umar Daura, also noted that efforts were underway to ensure peace among farmers and herdsmen in the south-west.

“The Seriki Fulani has already toured the whole of South-West states from Oyo, Ogun and Ondo states to ensure peace between farmers and herdsmen.

“This last Sunday, he went to the region to pacify them on the need not to create tension as the security of this country remains paramount,” Mr. Daura said.

There’s been palpable tension in South West in recent weeks over the nefarious activities of Fulani herdsmen, a development that has led to issuance of quit notice to them in Oyo and Ondo.

In both states, they are accused of being responsible for the widespread killings and pervasive kidnapping in the region, leading to attack of some of their settlements, a situation that’s taken the orchestra of civil war to its crescendo.
