EKO HOT BLOG reports that Nigeria’s Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, has identified missed opportunities as the reason behind the team’s 1-0 defeat to Guinea Bissau in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match played in Abuja on Friday. It was the Super Eagles’ first home loss in six years in the AFCON qualifiers.
Mama Balde scored the only goal of the encounter for the visitors, and despite creating several scoring chances, the Super Eagles failed to convert them. The goalkeeper of the visiting team, Jonas Mendes, hardly made any saves off the Super Eagles.

Speaking to the press after the match, Peseiro expressed his disappointment with the result, stating that his team played well, but they were just unlucky. He believed that if they had converted their chances, they would have beaten Guinea Bissau.
“We created many, many clear opportunities, but it was a bad day. If we played in the way we played today, we are supposed to beat Guinea-Bissau. Guinea-Bissau was lucky, and it was very bad luck for us,” Peseiro said.
The defeat was a setback for Nigeria, who are looking to qualify for their 20th AFCON tournament. The Super Eagles are in Group D of the AFCON qualifiers alongside Egypt, Sudan, and Guinea Bissau. With only the group winners guaranteed a spot in the tournament, Nigeria will need to bounce back in their next qualifying match against Sudan on March 29.

The defeat has also put pressure on Peseiro, who took over as head coach of the Super Eagles in February 2022, after the resignation of Gernot Rohr. Peseiro will need to find a way to motivate his team to bounce back from the defeat and keep their hopes of qualifying for the tournament alive.
