EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to the company, both WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business will be affected by the policy change, which targets outdated operating systems that no longer meet the app’s evolving technical requirements.
For iPhone users, devices running iOS versions earlier than 15.1 will no longer be supported. This means that iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus — all limited to iOS 12.5.7 — will become incompatible with the messaging app from the stated date.
On the Android front, WhatsApp had earlier, on January 1, 2025, ceased functionality on devices operating below Android 5.0 (Lollipop), effectively cutting off support for Android KitKat (version 4.4) and older.
The latest update extends this move, impacting a range of older Android devices released over a decade ago. Among the phones listed are:
-
Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
-
Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Moto E (2014), Razr HD
-
HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
-
LG: Optimus G, G2 Mini, L90
-
Google Nexus 4
-
Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
Meta says the change will affect a small group of users, mostly those using smartphones that are more than 10 years old. The company maintains that discontinuing support for these older devices is crucial to maintaining security standards and ensuring smooth operation across newer hardware and operating systems.
